Move n Groove!

Move n Groove is a fun-filled educational music and movement program for pre-school age children and their caretakers

At Move n Groove children will have fun experiencing:
Singing
Dancing
Playing percussion instruments
Finger-plays
Story time

With Move n Groove your child will:
Learn songs and rhythm
Explore play through movement and dance
Learn language skills
Develop social skills
Increase coordination
Discover their own creativity

Each 45-minute class is taught by vocalist and energetic educator Miss Danielle who has instructed young students for over 10 years in the United States. Classes are taught in English.

A typical class would include:

CIRCLE TIME
Each child is present with a caretaker and sits in a circle. All have some percussion instruments like egg shakers. We sing a Hello song including every child’s name. Then 3 – 5 other classic songs, for example:
Itsy Bitsy Spider, Wheels on the Bus, Five Little Monkeys, etc

THEME
Then I’d introduce the theme. Themes could be a Summer, a Color, My Body, Farm Animals, Bedtime, My Family, etc

I’d introduce the theme through a short story or book, a puppet play, a prop, or a sensory object

Next we’d do a song or two that goes with the theme and includes finger action and gestures or introducing a new instrument. Sometimes I like to teach a word in American sign language, too! Great for kids with delayed verbal development. I'd also consider teaching basic turkish words (through song) like good morning, hello, thank you, etc.

PLAY/MOVEMENT
Next would be a game that involves exploring the space and relation to each other: example – Finding a lost teddy bear hidden in the room, or Freeze Dance (dance until music stops then freeze), or a sharing game like Rolling the Ball.

Note: I like to use 2/3rd live and led singing and 1/3 recorded music so that they get both experiences and also frees the teacher up to lead more movement with the recorded music. With classic songs, I will often change the lyrics to fit our theme. With recorded music I include children’s artists and classic tunes from broadway shows, disco, the Beatles, etc – whatever fits our theme and will get us movin!

Then at some point there should be …
FREE PLAY
During free play, kids get some wiggles out from all that sitting and focusing. I play cd’s of theme-related songs while they explore stations around the room: instruments, balls, scarves, climbing equipment (if space allows), and most of all – each other! This is also a great time to introduce kids and caretakers and build community.

After free play is

PARACHUTE TIME!
If I can’t get a parachute, I’d get a giant piece of material. Everyone grabs hold of the edge as we sing songs learning to shake it. This is a time to teach concepts of tempo, team-effort, following direction, and dynamics. At some point, kids get on top while adults shake it. Then kids get under and adults shake it over them. This is usually the favorite part of every class!

GOODBYE-ING
For saying goodbye, we may reprise a theme song we learned and the finger play that accompanied. I may also blow bubbles for one song (there is a safe way to do this even on a linoleum floor) and then we end with a goodbye song.

Basic props needed:
Shakers
Cd player
Scarves
Other percussion instruments: clackers, tambourines, xylophones, castanets, etc
Parachute or something like it
Bubbles

Additional:
Puppets
Drums
Harmonicas
Some costume materials like hats
Books

If in a bigger space with storage:
Climbing materials – cubes, steps, tunnels
Balance Beam
Hula hoops
Mats for the floor
Crafting supplies

Teaching pre-school children is very different than instructing an adult in a music lesson. Even when we teach individual piano or group piano to children under age 6, we will still break it up into sections of play and learning – including a jam session, a fun-composing part, a “theory” lesson (off book!), and games. we also use a color solfege method for teaching diatonic scale to children who are not of reading age.
